This construction of Westminster Abbey began in 1245, but previous incarnations of the church have existed on the site since 960. Over the years, several extensions were added, eventually finishing in its present form 500 later in 1745 with the West towers.

Westminster Abbey has been home to coronations since 1066 when William the Conqueror was crowned at the site. It has also been home to no less than eleven royal weddings, including most recently Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011.

Inside, the abbey is a magnificent work of art and the cloisters are equally worth a visit. Significant areas include the North Transept, the Sanctuary, the College Garden, the Tomb of Mary (Queen of Scotts), and Poet’s Corner.

Be sure to look out for the Coronation Chair that has been in use since Edward II in 1308.

Guided tours of the inside of the Abbey are available for £5 extra per person and last about 90 minutes. Multi-language audio tours are complimentary and available at the abbey entrance – alternatively, there is an app you can download on your smartphone.

The opening hours listed above are for visitors to the abbey. Services are free to all. On religious days such as Sunday, the Abbey is only open for services and not for visiting.

Most visitors will spend 90 minutes to 2 hours inside. Queues are lengthy for the abbey almost year-round.

In 2018, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries opened providing access to a part of the church which has been closed to the public for 700 years. The new galleries give visitors magnificent views to the Palace of Westminster and into the church, displaying treasures and collections reflecting the Abbey’s rich and varied thousand-year history.
