If you are going to make a trip to one castle outside of central London, make it Windsor Castle. This is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and it is a magnificent sight to behold, dating back to the 11th century.

Windsor Castle is where The Queen spends a substantial amount of her time, including many weekends, and a month over the Easter period. To this date the castle has been home to 39 monarchs, spanning back over 900 years.

Your visit to Windsor Castle will include The State Apartments where the Royal Family often host events for organisations they support; Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, the largest doll’s house in the world made on a scale of 1:12; The Semi-State Rooms (open from September to March only); and St. George’s Chapel.

In the same vein as at Buckingham Palace, there is also a Changing the Guard ceremony at Windsor Castle. The ceremony takes place at 11:00 within the Castle grounds Mondays to Saturdays from April until the end of July, and on alternate days for the rest of the year. There is no Changing the Guard on Sundays. A provisional schedule is available online.

Be sure to take in one of the Precinct Tours, led by the Wardens, which last 30 minutes and give you an overview of the castle’s history. A multimedia tour handset can be picked up near the entrance to guide you through the castle – this is available in nine different languages, including English. A special child-friendly multimedia tour option is also available in English only.

Take our Windsor Castle private tour to enjoy this magnificent Royal Palace – we offer options with transfers by luxury vehicle or by fast train.
